BOB GALINDO REMEMBERS .......
The 13th floor elevators...........hmmm?????
I did not pal around with them,
so I don't have too much too share. I suppose I could do a superficial
treatment with a few ancecdotes. I should get my brother Danny
(Elevators bassist) to start talking about it. This might take
a while. The following is a list of anecdotes which could be
expanded upon:
- Stacy Sutherland and either the bass player or the drummer
(to be confirmed) quit Max and the Lingsman to start a new band
(the Elevators). I believe I may have mentioned this when I wrote
about the secret origin of the original Max and The Laughing
Kind.
- Roky Erickson asleep on a couch with his head in an ashtray
at the Goldstar Studios in Houston Texas. When he wakes up, he
is speechless, but he wants to show me something. He opens his
wallet and pulls out a picture of Elvis. His expression says
"WOW".
- Love Street light show and circus, San Antonio, Texas. Roky
will not take the stage because he fears that people will notice
the third eye on his forehead. He sneaks onto the stage by duckwalking
behind the amplifiers, with his hand covering his forehead.
- I was once asked to join the Elevators to replace Stacy Sutherland
- he was going off to serve jail time. I turned down the offer,
I did not want to flunk organic chemistry (very time consuming-no
time to tour). Mr. Bill Dillard, vice president of international
artists was stunned. He could not believe that I did not want
to tour with a bunch of wigged out drug crazed outlaws. They
did not make any money to speak of and they were so out of control
that I am surprised that my brother did not beat the shit out
of all of them one at a time or all together. But they did get
lots of pussy and buttloads of free drugs. But I was engaged
and I did not use drugs, so I just was not interested.
- I jammed with a few of them onstage at the old Vulcan Gas
Company in Austin. It was an honor to play with Stacy Sutherland.
He was an excellent expressive guitar player. I learned much
from him that night.
- I used to play in a band called The Concentric Excentrics
with the drummer, Danny Thomas, and of course the bass player,
my brother, Danny Galindo. We played soul music. This was before
they became the Elevators. At that time, Danny Thomas was the
president of the sophomore class at Trinity University. He was
VERY clean cut and had the manners of a southern gentleman. I
believe he was originally from north/south Carolina or Virginia.
My mother liked him because he was such a gentleman. We used
to practice in my mother's living room. The last time I saw him
was in the early seventies. He was working in a Der Weinerschnitzel
in Houston, Texas.
- I once had the honor of crashing in a real Houston hippie
pad full of real live stoned Houston hippies. But my brother
was the only Elevator in the pad at the time. I was scared to
death. I was afraid that the FBI, CIA, NEA, HPD, HCSD, the Texas
Rangers and the Federales would bust the door down and take us
all to jail. The place was HOT.
- I remember driving around Kerrville with my brother one day.
He was very paranoid. He said the cops followed them all of the
time. He was constantly looking in his rear view mirror. But
then again, he is always paranoid. The night before, we went
to some cool bluff overlooking the Guadalupe river just outside
of town. All the local hippies and heads were there that night
hanging out, playing guitars, smoking dope, saying things like
"wow man, far fucking out!......groovy!"
- Gold Star Studios, Houston, Texas. Same night that Roky showed
me the Elvis picture. The band is jamming in the studio. They
are writing/creating a new song right before my eyes. I looked
over and noticed that the jug player, Tommy Hall, was writing
lyrics as quickly as Stacy could play riffs and hot licks. I
was amazed at the ease in which this man wrote lyrics................
- Stay tuned..........................................!!

Chris writes: "Names of original
13th floor elevator members: Stacy Sutherland lead guitar (gun
shot in houston early 70's). Ronnie Leatherman bass (still lives
in kerrville). John Ike Walton drums (still lives in kerrville).
Tommy Hall jug (lasttime seen, san francisco), Roky Erickson (in
and out of psyco-treatment still in austin). I did a cult record
with Roky back in 84 titled "Live at the Ritz", Rokys
mom recorded it on a cassette player from the audience. Believe
it or not, it wasnt bad at all. So much so,that New Rose records(france)
bought the tape for 10 grand and released it! You can still find
this record on the net,but my name on it is Chris Holyhouse (hehehe),
Rokys mom couldnt spell my name. The linup was: Roky-singer,guitar
/ Fred Krc-drums (pronounced kersh)/Appa Perry-bass/Will Sexton-guitar
(charlies lil' bro)/Chris Holzhaus-guitar."
